Stone Description

Larimar is a rare silicate mineral found only in the Dominican Republic that is prized for its beautiful ocean blue colouration. Larimar is the name for a specific variety of the calcium-sodium-hydroxide inosilicate mineral pectolite which is unique because of its volcanic origins and resulting blue colouration caused by impurities of copper within the crystal structure. Evidence suggests that the first attempt to prospect this stone occurred in 1916 when local clergy member Father Miguel Domingo Fuertes Loren requested permission from the Ministry of Mining to mine a blue stone in the Barahona Province, at a time when western scientists had yet to document pectolite in the Dominican republic. That first request was denied by the government and the stone remained unknown to the rest of the world until 1974 when Miguel Méndez and Norman Rilling came across alluvial deposits of the blue pectolite on a beach at the foot of the Bahuroco Mountain Range in Barahona. The native people of the area were apparently aware of the mineral and held the stone in high regard, believing it was a gift from the sea. Méndez was inspired by this along with the colouration of the stone, and named the gem Larimar, using the Spanish word for sea "mar" in combination with the name of his beloved daughter "Larissa". After these initial deposits were found, a search along the Bahuroco River revealed the place in the mountains where the alluvial gravel had originated from and a mine was established at that location shortly thereafter.

About Heightening Awareness: We are a jewelry brand, alternative care service, and education campaign operated by artist, educator, and mystic Yagé Enigmus. Yagé's jewelry is hand-crafted from precious metals and 100% natural gemstones. Using a sleek and elegant silver frame, Yagé highlights the natural beauty of each individual stone with the intention of drawing focus to the incredible forms that can be taken by the matter this planet is composed of. These studies of Earth's splendor are meant to incite reflection on humankind's relationship to the planet, and encourage self-love by displaying immaculate manifestations of the same universal forces that allowed for the birth of living things.

Yagé hopes these internal reflections may then help to encourage further explorations into science, art, history, spirituality, and a vast number of other topics that are considered integral to the human experience.

All stones used in Yagé's jewelry are responsibly sourced from small independent business in order to minimize the humanitarian impact of large commercial mining operations, and in some cases are even bought directly from the miners themselves; additionally, all scrap metal generated during the production process is recycled and refined for reuse to minimize the environmental impact of precious metal mining.
